The Great American Smokeout takes place every year in November to encourage smokers quit for at least one day, in hopes they will quit forever. Since 1977 communities have offered cessation classes, 'cold turkey' lunches, and more to support quitters during the Smokeout.

The Third Edition of the Tobacco Atlas Released
The Tobacco Atlas, Third Edition, published by the American Cancer Society and World Lung Foundation is available.  The Atlas is a valuable resource for dental hygienists in tobacco control activities.  The Tobacco Atlas can be accessed at http://www.tobaccoatlas.org/.  Limited copies are available for free.  The website also contains research and data to assist with tobacco control efforts.

MMWR Reaffirms Smoking as Leading Cause of Preventable Morbidity and Mortality

An excerpt from Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, January 14, 2011 / 60(01);109-113: “Cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States, resulting in an estimated 443,000 premature deaths and $193 billion in direct health-care expenditures and productivity losses each year. Each day in the United States, approximately 3,900 persons aged 12--17 years smoke their first cigarette, and an estimated 1,000 adolescents become daily cigarette smokers. The vast majority of persons who begin smoking during adolescence are addicted to nicotine by age 20.”
